How to improve your Sperm Count and Improve Sperm Motility - a Personal Story
and advice from
experience.
The following is based on my own personal experience. I am not a doctor and
any advice given here is to help others achieve an improved sperm count and
improve sperm motility, I am
not selling any products!
Five years ago I was married and had two teenage children and my wife declared
out of the blue that she wanted
to stop taking the pill and one of us should be sterilized. Not suprisingly
she thought it would best if it was me! So I reluctantly agreed to a
vasectomy. A year
later she wanted a divorce, - isn't life great sometimes! Anyway, this is about
improving sperm count and improving sperm motility not divorce advice, so let
me carry on.... After the
divorce trauma was all over, I met a wonderful woman who has changed my life,
and we are now
married. But we want children, so we quickly arranged a vasectomy reversal
operation. The
operation itself was a success, but the tests afterwards indicated that there
were no viable sperm. The doctors advised us that as it had been 5 years or so
since the vasectomy, my body had given up producing sperm and at my age (nearing
50) the situation was very unlikely to change and they could offer no solution.
I was effectively sterile! We were devastated.
As anyone who wants children and there are problems (low sperm count or low
sperm motility), then you can understand our
despair. But undeterred and determined, we started to see what we could do for
ourselves. We had to find a way to improve my sperm count and improve sperm
motility. After some research and a consultation with a dietition expert
specialising in
improving fertility (we were looking at improving my wifes fertility and
improving my sperm count and sperm motility), we started to try some of her
suggestions. It took time (6
months perhaps) but we started to get positive results. Here
below I have listed the things we have done to go from a Zero viable sperm
count to improving my sperm count to around 18
million (and improving my sperm motility to around 30% mobility). HOORAY! The
generally accepted target is 20+ million sperm count
and 50%+ sperm motility so whilst the
figures are still a little low, we are now significantly improving the odds
(they were zero to start with!) of a natural conception
and certainly would have no problem with IVF options. I am pleased to advise
that we have now achieved a natural conception! Hooray (Again!)! Proof that
something here worked for us at least!
FIRST STEPS TO IMPROVE SPERM COUNT AND IMPROVE SPERM MOTILITY:
NICOTINE, ALCOHOL, DRUGS and CAFFIENE.
When you talk to any medical practitioner about
fertility they will ask about 3 things: Alcohol, Drugs, and Smoking.
Whilst they will generally tell you that you should avoid excesses of the any
of these 3, lots of research has shown that
any
smoking,
any
alcohol, and
any
recreational drugs
will reduce your sperm count and sperm motility. Some research also indicates
that
any
caffiene will also have an adverse effect. If you are
serious about improving your sperm count and improving sperm motility then
cut out all of these to as near zero as possible
. This is
VERY
important.
EXCERCISE.
How can you expect your sperm to be fit and healthy if you are not?
Get regular excercise, get to a regular body weight, START NOW!.
DIET:
You need a healthy diet. Your Sperm need all the right Vitamins and Minerals
for the manufacturing process. If you eat rubbish you will not improve your
sperm count or improve your sperm motility, you will harm them!. Avoid fast
food and get a healthy diet. I started
eating more salads, and more fresh vegetables and loads of fruit. Nuts are an
important part of the diet for men as they contain Selinium and Zinc which are
both important for improving sperm count and sperm motility.
DIET SUPPLEMENTS:
Whilst some doctors will say that supplements are no substitute for a healthy
diet, but we believed supplements can certainly help, and the following was my
own selection which I
believed was worthwhile:
SELENIUM.
Selenium scavenges free radicals in the body and is used by the
testes to make selenoproteins, a vital protein required in sperm production.
Well formed sperm are more likely to be more motile (improved sperm motility).
Selenium supplement pills
are available at most chemists. I started taking Selenium every day (one
pill). I also tried to eat foods rich in Selenium. Foods rich in selenium
include brazil nuts, eggs, garlic and seafood.
ZINC.
Low Zinc levels affect sperm motility, sperm quality and sperm counts.
supplement pills are available at most chemists. I started taking Zinc pills
every day (one pill). I also tried to eat foods rich in Zinc. Foods rich in
Zinc include seafood (particularly oysters!), liver, lean cuts of red meat,
nuts and grains.
VITAMIN E.
Vitamin E protects against free radicals in the body. Free
radicals are unstable molecules which damage sperm cells and cause them to
become immotile. Vitamin E supplement pills are available at most chemists and
some Selinium pils combine Selinium with Vitamins A, C and E.
However, there are health risks with high Vitamin E intake so I looked at
dietary
sources for this. Foods rich in Vitamin E include Asparagus. Avocado, Eggs,
Milk, Nuts, such as almonds or hazelnuts, Seeds, Spinach and other green leafy
vegetables, Unheated vegetable oils, Wheat germ, Wholegrain foods. Vitamin E
can improve Sperm Motility.
FOLIC ACID:
Again I was not aware of this supplement initially so I cannot
comment on its effectiveness from the start of my journey (in improving sperm
count and improving sperm motility) personally but I am now taking
this and will
see what happens. Folic Acid is usually given to women, however in the
Netherlands they have tested this on sub-fertile men -
Supplementing the diet with folic acid and zinc can have a significant effect
on improving semen quality in sub-fertile men, according to recent research
from the Netherlands......they focused on folic acid and zinc because both are
known to be essential to the creation of both DNA and sperm......sub-fertile
men receiving both zinc sulfate and folic acid exhibited a 74 per cent increase
in the number of normally formed sperm in their semen samples.
The tests certainly indicate that there are possible benefits in improving
sperm count and improving sperm quality and improving sperm mobility.
HERBAL:
I tried some of this but not to a regular extent. Try taking herbs
such as Maca Root and Ginger to improve sperm count and improve sperm motility.
Both are non-toxic herbs which have been used by
Traditional Chinese Medicine and South American Medicine, to improve male
fertility. They are believed to be particularly beneficial for improving sperm
motility (and are ingredients in the commercial FertilPlus, so they must
believe it helps!).
FINALLY:
TIME:
Do not expect results overnight! The production of sperm in the testes
takes 8 to 12 weeks (many sources estimate 12 weeks ie 3 months), and your body
may take
many months to improve if you are making lifestyle and dietary changes. So you
need to be patient. It takes time to improve sperm count and improve sperm
motility. Leave at least 3 months between semen tests. It is also worth noting
that your sperm quantity and sperm quality reflect your lifestyle from the
previous 3
months, so there are no short term fixes! Be determined and stick to a plan!
SOME EXTRA ADVICE!
You wont see this anywhere else that I can find, but there
was some research (Australian I believe wouldn't you guess!) to suggest that
regular ejaculation also helps to improve sperm count! To me it
made sense that if I was to get my sperm factory back in full production then
they
needed as much encouragment as I could give them. As well as making sure they
had the right raw materials I decided to run the production line flat out!
Ejaculation once every day
was the target (with or without my wifes help!).
But if you are either trying
for conception or submitting a sample for a test then you need to give your
testes a chance to build up their stocks!
Abstention for a few days (views
vary but 3 days to 5 days is typical advice), before the critical ejaculation
(sample day or trying for fertilisation)
is VERY important. And finally if trying to conceive, then after the abstention
period, assume you have only one shot! - So timing is everything (there are
many methods for determining the best time), but making love 10 times in 2 days
is a waste of
time, your sperm count will be very, very low if you do this (after the first
time).
Avoid very hot baths and tight underwear! Give your sperm factory a chance!
IMPROVING SPERM COUNT AND IMPROVING SPERM MOBILITY SUMMARY:
With a bit of time, lifestyle and dietary changes, supplements and herbal
remedies, I improved my sperm count and improved my sperm mobilty from zero to
an acceptable level. It is always
possible to improve your sperm count. If there are no underlying medical
problems I have shown that it should be possible to
improve your sperm count and improve your sperm motility in 6 to 9 months.
I improved my own sperm count from zero to 18 million in less
than a year! Good Luck, determination is the key!
